New patio installation
A new patio starts with the position: where the sun falls when you would use it, how it meets the back door, and where the water is going to go. We work that out with you on site before anything is quoted.
Then it is built properly. The area is excavated to depth, a compacted sub-base laid, and the paving bedded on a full mortar bed so every slab is fully supported. Falls run away from the house, damp-proof course levels are respected so paving never bridges them, and joints are pointed to a consistent finish. Edges, steps and the join to the lawn are part of the design.

Materials
Choosing the paving
The base and the workmanship are the same whichever you pick. What changes is how it looks, how much upkeep it wants and what it costs. We bring samples and look at them in daylight against your house rather than choosing off a screen.
Indian sandstone
The most common choice in a British garden: warm, riven underfoot and forgiving of a garden that is not perfectly square. Bought calibrated, the bed depth stays even. It weathers into the garden rather than staying showroom-new.
Porcelain
Dense, colour-stable and almost non-porous, so algae and stains sit on top and brush off. The lowest-maintenance option, and the one we usually steer people towards for a patio in shade or under trees.
Block paving
Small units that cope with slight ground movement and can be lifted and re-laid over a drain or a cable run. Worth considering where the patio meets a block drive, so the two tie together without a change of material.
Concrete paving
The budget end, and much better than it used to be. Modern moulds run from riven stone-effect flags to clean linear planks, and the colour goes right through rather than sitting on the surface. Best where the patio is a working surface rather than the centrepiece.
Limestone and granite are worth asking about too. Limestone is finer and far more uniform than sandstone, which suits a rendered or painted house where mixed tones look busy; granite is the hardest and least porous of the lot. We show those as samples rather than photographs, because the colour is the whole point and a screen never gets it right.
